A design for a small building in one of the side chapels of the Dom in Lübeck, Germany. The building’s function would be to clean and assemble the bones of animals from the local zoo, so that the Natural History Museum already established in the cloisters would eventually expand to fill the Dom itself with zoological specimens.

The process of cleaning bones [using flesh-eating beetles], assembling the bones, and permanently displaying the clean skeletons, was thought of as analogous to Hell, Purgatory and Heaven.
